Outside The Box Marketing #1: Market with Entertainment

When people think about marketing their businesses these days, typically these are the strategies that come to mind…

 

  • Optimizing their website (SEO, mobile redesign)
  • Social media
  • Direct mail campaigns
  • Online newsletters or email marketing
  • Business networking (like BNI or another networking group)
  • In-person events like tradeshows or an open house.

All of these are essential, but they are also the types of marketing that every other business owner already thinks about. In competitive industries, when you’ve already checked off the items listed above, you need to start thinking of “Outside the Box” marketing tactics that can give you a competitive edge!

That’s why I’m starting a series of blog posts with more creative ideas for marketing! These are marketing tactics that are not yet mainstream, so they are probably not ideas your competitors have come up with yet!

This month we’ll tackle adding some magic to your in-person events by hiring an entertainer like a magician, comedian or a musician.  If you are doing any sort of in-person event like a tradeshow, open house or grand opening, you can’t just show up and expect people to care. They won’t! You need to give more of an incentive. Hiring an entertainer gives you a main attraction and people a reason to come out other than just buying your products or services, which will lead to more visitors at your event.

People don’t love to be sold to, but they do love to be entertained. Often the performers can even incorporate your company’s message into the show. This can be a lot more effective than simply saying, “hey buy my product, it’s awesome.”

Why Not Add Some Magic?

One performer I know who is extremely effective at corporate entertaining is Corporate Magician Phil Smith from Abracadabra Productions.  He is a magician who entertains at all kind of corporate events and Trade Shows.  Here is what he had to say when asked about why someone should hire trade show magician like him for an upcoming corporate event:

Make your Next Corporate Event Rock!

Another great option is hiring a band, particularly for a grand opening or an open house. Many local bands are happy to book gigs for corporate events. In Maine, the one that comes to mind is Wavelength Band. They are well known for doing weddings but they can also rock a corporate event too. Johnna their manager says:

Keep in mind this can often be a long-term strategy. Many of the people who come to your event or see you at a trade show may not immediately need your product or service. However, later on if they do have a need, your memorable presence will make it more likely that they do business with you in the future!
